Default Ads…Can We Put Our Heads Together?

  • I’ve been relying on WP125 for several years now, but as ad sales on my site have outstripped my ad space, the sharing of ad slots is necessary. Using the random option allows this to happen, but introduces the “default ad bug”. This has been documented in several threads. Even though I have 4 spaces and 8 ads active, the default ad shows up frequently…sometimes in two slots.

    ? Work around 1, turn off random does not work as only 4 of the ads show

    ? Work around 2, insert one paid ad in place of the default ad. This ad will not get any sort of count for hits. The real downside is sometimes this ad will appear twice, which is uncool.

    While that suppressed the default ad from showing, it also went back to only showing 4 of the 8 ads.

    So, it seems like there has got to be someone around here that know enough to comb through the code and allow for more ads than slots without the default ad showing up. It’s sad that the developer seems to have moved on as WP125 is a greta piece of software for those of us that don’t want to participate in ad networks because we sell ads locally.

    Workaround #4 seems to work best so far. I created a picture that is a white block 3 px by 3px. I set that as the default ad. I then set WP125 to show one more ad than I wanted (I want 5 but set for 6). What I get now is mostly 5 ads with the tiny default and no double. Occasionally I get only 4 ads displayed as the “default ad” square doubles up in the last two slots.

    Best fix yet…think I can live with it.
