Default Audio Player controls not showing in 3.8

I have added in some mp3 to my site and the latest version of WP has the embedded audio built in so I didnt need a plugin. BUT the player controls dont show. The timeline shows and an volume control shows on the line below but the actual PLAY button does not show. Any ideas?
