default category problem..errant posts just appear

  • Hey all…Im pretty new to WP but have been doing scratch html, forums, and shopping cart sites for several years now. Ive got a problem that I hope someone can explain to me because Im at a lost to figure it out.
    My problem is that the default category seems to get some errant (ghost) posts placed in it or there are some posts which are hidden to me. It seems to always be the same number of posts too..15. And when you click the cat link, it goes 404, so nothing shows. This is more of a nuisance than anything or at least it appears to be, but I wonder what is causing this and why I cannot stop the default category from being displayed in my sidebar widget (collapsing categories)..even tho I specifically set the display to omit that cat number?
    Ive tried disabling plugins and rechecking one at a time..but it seems to have no effect and the errant cat display can only be solved by restoring the DB to a point where this condition was not present…or…deleting and re-establishing the category altogether..but it eventually comes back, altho I dont know what the trigger may be.

    these are my active plugins, 12 or so were installed and ok prior to the time this condition first appeared.

    There seems to be a connection with the Collapsing Categories plugin, as when I tick the widgit setting “Expanding shows: Sub-categories and Posts” …the default category DOESNT display in the lineup any more.
    But on the otherhand, selecting..”Just Sub-categories”..allows the previous condition (default cat. ghost/unwanted display) to return, still showing same erroneous post count (is empty, save one draft, but states 15) and 404 when clicked.
    Ill keep working on it and lyk what I find, but of course any suggestions are welcome..thanks! ??
