Default fields for custom post type

  • How do I add default fields to a custom post type so that every time I create a new post of this certain type, it shows several custom fields to fill in? Also, can these fields be mandatory? Thirdly, how do I do this via the WordPress API (ie not with a 3rd party plugin’s GUI)?
