• Hello,

I’ve heard just yesterday about Polylang and I am interested to use it for the bentovillage.me new website.
I had first planned to write it all in English, and have done the home page in English.

While starting to configure Polylang and reading the fast setup documentation, a terrible idea comes to my mind : this WordPress install is localized in French (dashboard and everything), what if this would confuse the Polylang plugin?

So what is the best way to deal with that? Can I have the dashboard in French, write my articles in English and have pages translations after?

If not, what are my best options? (I intend to more or less translate everything by myself, or use the fast option and correct later).

I would have another question, but this would relate to another website and setup type, so I’ll keep it for later.

    Best regards,
    Mélodie

    Hi

Yes it doesn’t matter. To change the language admin go in Users > Your profile > Admin language.

If you want to use a professional or automatic translation service, you can install Lingotek Translation, as an addon of Polylang.

    Hi Chrystl,

I thank you and went to that section, there are 3 choices : “default wordpress, French and English”. I switched from “default” to “English”.

After I wrote the first post here, I created a “tests” subsite and started playing with the configuration, while I had copied the first content to a “Home” page.

It seems to me that the plugin brings me to a page in French when I click to English and vice versa. My guess might be right : this install is the French version of WordPress, the one provided by the WordPress-fr community, and that might become tricky.

I will try the other way around declare French as the first language, English as the second language, and change the Home page to see what happens next.

If you think I’m wrong and that I missed a step, please tell me.

About Lingotek Translation, I have put the user agreement into translate.google. It seems long to read. Perhaps I might as well do the automatic translations there, it might be less complicated than having to register somewhere… (is Lingotek your business?)

Which page, in frontend or in admin side? Your pages “tests?

    (is Lingotek your business?)

No, Lingotek has is own forum support.

On the website. While using the custom menus also it becomes confusing, sometimes clicking the logo (header) seems to redirect to the page in English and sometimes to the page in French.

I am now installing an additional web browser which I’ll setup to display English as the default (chromium browser) to continue testing.

    Hi again,

    https://bentovillage.me/tests/

if I click to the flags, the page is empty. If I click to the header, the page comes empty also. If I click to “Accueil” the page is there (in French) and if I click to “Home” the page is there (in English).

So at the moment I still don’t know how to use the plugin in an effective way.

Ok, in Chromium Browser, with “en_US”,”en” as the default,
    https://bentovillage.me/tests/

redirects immediately to https://bentovillage.me/tests/en/ where I get this message:
“It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.”

The selection defaults to the US Flag. (Which I am not surprised). If I remove the entries “Accueil” and “Home”, I still get no content displayed.

When you click on your Logo you have redirected on your french or english list posts: https://bentovillage.me/tests/fr/ or https://bentovillage.me/tests/en/
To display this list go in Settings > Readings: and select your page list in “Posts page”.

If you don’t want this redirection, check the option “The front page url contains the language code instead of the page name or page id ” as explained here : 7 – DEFINE YOUR HOME PAGE AS A STATIC PAGE ?.

Check too : “Hide URL language information for default language”.
