Default role at registration

When a new user registers their role defaults to “none” – is there a way to force a specific created role as the default for all new users? I’ve tried to use AAM with Multisite User Management plugin (https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/multisite-user-management) and select the new role created by AAM, but that does nothing.
Any ideas?
