Default Sort order doesn't make sense?

My portfolio items seem to be displaying in a sort order I can’t understand. They’re not in the order I uploaded them, and they’re not in the order I backdated them (which is how I’d prefer it). Is there a way to just make sure the sort order is set to the “published by” date?
