Defeats the purpose of child-themes..?

I love this plugin but…
What will happen to changes that I make to the plugin’s theme when I update/upgrade the plugin? Will they be over-written? Why would they necessarily be preserved as stated in the quote below?
Can I create a child-theme for the plugin’s theme? If not, this plugin’s behaviour (in creating an extra themes folder) seems a backward step, and defeats the purpose and utility of child-themes…
2. Themes-ai1ec folder
– WordPress themes are stored in wp-content folder, we decided to do the same with our plugin’s themes and store them in themes-ai1ec folder inside wp-content folder. Why? Well this way when you update your plugin, your themes folder will not be erased/removed and any changes that you make to the plugin’s theme will be preserved.https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/all-in-one-event-calendar/
