    Hi there,

    I’ve downloaded Hummingbird and I’ve been playing with the awesome features. My client’s site has a large issue with render blocking assets and some image compression on a handful of images + lazy load, but one thing at a time…so I decided to start with deferring my CSS/JS. However, I’m not seeing the changes I made.

    Here’s what I did: I pulled up the audit with my list of render blocking CSS and JS files. I used the advanced feature in Asset Optimization to defer those assets to the footer. I did it by saving one at a time, and testing in three browsers with cleared caches to confirm nothing was broken. After a while I got through about 80% of the list and was tired (ha), so I decided to take a break and run a new performance test on both the plugin and PageSpeed Insights. Those assets are STILL coming up in the list as problems….

    Is there a step I’m missing?
    Thanks!

  • Hi @toxoplasmaarts,

    I have tested your site via the Google PageSpeed test and do see that some assets are still render blocking. But I have checked you page and do not see that they are moved to the footer. For example, the theme styles (astra-theme-css-css ID) are still in the header. Could you please post a screenshot with your Asset Optimization settings?

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Thanks for your reply, Anton! I have some screenshots to share. I can’t add them to the ticket so I put them in a non-tagged imgur album:

    These aren’t all the assets where I selected “move to footer,” but enough to give you an idea.

    @toxoplasmaarts,

    The assets in the screenshots that you have posted are actually in the footer, as selected. And they are not shown as problematic assets in the PageSpeed scan. Please compare the list and check the Asset Optimization settings.

    Hi Anton,

    I think I may be a little confused, because I was pretty sure I was selecting the correct files, and they are still coming up in a Google and Hummingbird scan. I’ll use the the main minified css for the theme as an example:

    What I see in the audit: https://imgur.com/iJdodC4
    What I see in Asset Optimization settings: https://imgur.com/qcgJKek

    There are many items still on the list that I haven’t tried to defer yet, because I stopped when I noticed some of the others (like the one above) were still coming up in the audit, and wanted to check on this first. I re-ran the audit in both Google and Hummingbird a couple of times and each time the list of render-blocking resources changed, but always included files I had deferred in the Asset Optimization settings.

    The other odd thing is that my score has already jumped significantly in the last few days.

    The one thing I haven’t done is the “Clear Cache” button *within* The Asset Opt. settings…should I try that?

    Thanks!

    @toxoplasmaarts,

    The asset in your example is indeed moved to the footer, as per your selection in Hummingbird. But assets in the footer can still be render-blocking.

    Best regards,
    Anton

    Ah I see– roger that!
    Thank you, Anton. I’ll let you know if I have any other questions!
