Defining a New Role

Is there any plugin that enables the WP user to define a new role?
I need to introduce the illustrators and photographers among the “contributors” list for an online magazine, but I cannot do that with the current WP.

I know I can add a custom field in the post, and have their name next to the writers name if I set it up that way in my post. But I want their name among the contributors list.
