Delete and recreate fields — loss of data?

  • In the process of troubleshooting a plugin problem, I’ve been asked by the plugin support team to delete some of my custom fields. I am hesitant to do so, because I have live users with data in those fields.

    So my question is: if I delete then recreate fields, is the data preserved? I imagine that they would have to have the exact same names….but even then, they might be identified by IDs which would change, and not be re-associated.

    Is it safe to delete and recreate? or would I lose data?

    I believe the data will be preserved BUT when you will recreate the fields there will be given a new ID in the database so you won’t see the data associated.

    So I don’t think this is going to work.
