First I really want to thank the person/people who help me. I truly appreciate it!

I had a self hosted blog that was inactive, I rarely ever posted anything and I wanted to start over. I deleted all files associated with the blog, but I have not done a thing with mysql because I’m skeert. (This is probably my problem, but as mentioned, I’m chikkin and need guidance).

So. I have all wordpress files deleted, then I downloaded the most current version, 2.9.2, then uploaded onto my server. Made it through the upload and created my wp-config.php file. Got that cute message that says something like “way to go sparky!”…

But it still won’t work. I am trying to open the index.php file and I get a message that says “oops, this link appears to be broken”.

    What am I doing wrong?

What version was your old blog? Did you backup the database before re-installing WordPress?

    ESMI, THANKS!

The old blog was version 2.7.1. I do have a back up of the wordpress files but not sure I backed up what was on mysql. I started to, then thought eh, I don’t care if I lose the old files anyhow. I hardly posted and wanted to start from scratch.

In that case set up a new database, amend your wp-config.php file to point to the new db and run https://your_domain/wp-admin/install.php again.

FWIW, I think the problem you’ve had is that you’re trying to run a 2.9.2 site using a 2.7.1 database.

HOLEY MOLEY! It worked! Thank you so much for the help, esmi. I have some more questions. Should I continue here or start a new thread?

I’d second uwiuw’s advice. A backup copy of the old db might come in handy at some later date.

Thanks esmi and uwiuw. I will definately learn to back up the database soon. at least now I have it working. HOw often do you guys back up your databases?

I use DBC Backup and schedule the backups weekly most of the time. Perhaps a little more frequently if there’s a rapid post turnover.
