• HELP, I had 800 comments in moderation with a few that were real and I wanted to approve, so I used the radio button I thought was for approved but when I clicked on the ‘moderate comments’ my real comments were deleted… Where did they go? Can I retrieve them?

My default is set for the delete radio button, which is the last one, so I figured going backwards the next one over was for spam and then the next one was for approved and the last one said bulk, so why did it delete my comments saying that 8 comments were deleted as spam?

    Thanks anyone for your help

  • Can I retrieve them?

Unless you have a database backup, no, you cannot retrieve them.

Thanks coldforged but how do I know if I have a database backup?

If you don’t know, then in all probability you don’t. One must manually create a backup so, assuming no memory loss, you would remember. Very sorry.

You could, of course, can try contacting your host to see if they have backups but in all honesty, I think it’s too late.

There a section on the Codex which explains how to backup WP so that you don’t hit this in the future. Also, July 23-30, 2005, will be WordPress Backup Week here in the forum and on the WordPress Codex where Support Volunteers will be helping users backup their WordPress site and databases.

Thanks everyone, I did write my host as it says somewhere that they do backups but I’m not holding my breath.

I was trying to figure out how this happened and I think I know now. Recently I updated to the new version and on my old version I had fixed it so that the radio button was always set to the delete button as a default and I was sure that’s what the last button was on the moderation page. But it’s not and I don’t what the last radio button is for…anyone knows?

Now with the new version, at the bottom there are new links that either ‘mark all for approval or all for deteletion” and that’s what I did use to get rid of all 800 stupid spam messages left. So now I know and hopefully won’t make this mistake again.

I will for sure be around for the backup week thanks for letting me know.

I DID IT! I got my comments back from 2 different sources.

    l) I did get an answer back from my host OnSmart
and they do backups. They are just fantastic – they restored the data in a text file which I was told to download and then re-import in the database. Now since I don’t know how to do that, I’m waiting for an answer.

    2) while I was waiting, I decided to go investigate in my phpadmin for the MySql and see if I can figure it out. But while I was there (MySql scares me cause I’m not sure what to do there), I click on the browse button in the wp-comments and all the comments were there including all the spam I had deleted…(that’s another question I will ask in the forum). So I found the comments I wanted, click on that row where it said edit, then inside I saw there were radio buttons in the section “comments approved” for spam, 1 and 0. I checked my comments that were already approved and see how it worked, and swiched the radio button to 1 and saved and voila, they are restored.

I can’t believe I did it…anyway hope this will help others.
