• I’ve been updating the sites I manage to WordPress 4.6 and have encountered a problem. I’m trying to delete unused themes and the deletion process doesn’t complete. It runs for quite a while with just the word “deleting” showing in the bottom of the window. When I finally give up and close the window, in some cases the theme has actually been deleted, but in other cases it is still showing on the themes page.

One site is using the Avada Theme, The other is using Catch Evolution (free version). I’m working on an iMac using Safari 9.1.1. Any suggestions?
    Cheers, Trudi

Have you considered deleting it using FTP , or your web-host’s cPanel or whatever file management application your host provides (no Dashboard access required).

All your themes are located in this themes directoey:
    /wp-content/themes/

I can and have done that at times, but its a work around. I’ve never had problems deleting themes from the site’s dashboard. This just started with the new version of WordPress. Also I often hand off sites to clients who are not able to manage the site from the Go Daddy servers. They should be able to use the tools provided on their site and not pay me to do this task.

FTP deletes are slow. Invoking PHP code to delete is slow. More so if you got a theme that has a ton of files to delete.

The quickest way is to SSH and delete the theme folder. It will be done in an instant.
