• How do I delete the category ‘Uncategorized’?

I made sure another category is default (Options/Writing), but it still says that it’s default, so I cannot delete it.

Is there any way around this?

The reason I ask, is because I don’t want it to be displayed in the category list; I cannot sort alphabetically if empty categories are hidden.

  • I don’t believe you can delete it, even if yo have another category,. The logical solution is to RENAME the uncategorised category to what you want it to be and use it like that.

RENAME seems like the best idea. …

Keep in mind also that if you do not use the Uncategorized category (do not check the box when you write the post) then this category will not show up on your WordPress Home Page with the list of other categories.

Yes, it will show up if I sort them alphabetically, because then I cannot hide empty categories.

With my theme, the Uncategorized does not show up as long as there are no postings in the Uncategorized categories. And my themes are sorted alphabetically. Take a look at my sidebar: https://www.youthtopia.com

what’s the difficulty in renaming that category> You’re going to add a category, why not just edit the name and use it? I’m baffled by the need to remove it

What makes you think I need another category?

You just asked if you could delete a cat because you added one, what I’m suggesting is delete the cat you made, and rename uncategorised to whatever you want. sicne you use the plural categories, i take it by that you signify more than what category – other wise you would have referred to it the singular form, category.

please yourself, but i think you’re making this overwhelmingly more difficult than it needs to be

Hi, I am resurrecting this post.

I had the same problem as the OP (original poster). I have no problem renaming the category, but I can’t figure out how to rename the categories on Word Pad. Help!?!?

I am on a MAC system, so I can’t right clight. How does one rename categories with Word Pad?

    Thanks for your help.

On your dashboard, there is an area called “manage”. within that area, is a link called “catagories”. Go into that area, and you’ll find a list of all of your catagories. Find the one called “Uncatagorized”, and click on “edit”. You’ll see the name field that has “uncatagorized” still in it. Delete that, and replace it with the name you prefer. That’s how I did it.

    thank you=)

hi, this worked well to change the name of the “uncategorized” category to something individualized.

BUT now that renamed category keeps showing up checked as default. how do i make no default (pre-checked) categories in my blog?

thanks for any help you can offer,
    sloane

There is only ONE category that is “the” default” – out of the box it is the Uncategorized. Since you have changed its name, whatever it is now… it still is the default.
Any other category that you make will NOT be default, of course.

If you have more categories, you can always pick one as default in admin > Options > Writing.

I didn’t read the whole of this thread. What I did was creating a new category, named something like ‘news’. In the options menu I set this new category as my default.
In WP 1.5 I had the options to delete the uncategorised category, but in wp 2.0.2 I can’t, it doesn’t matter anyhow, I never use it, ’cause the basic cat is news now. So please don’t botter.

What if I dont want to have any default whatsoever? Is this possible?

    No.
