Deploying to Amazon network… use BitNami? resource allocation?

  • I came across BitNami Cloud Hosting as a facilitator for deploying WP to Amazon, which seems to greatly simplify the process.

    Incidentally, was looking for a way to implement WP on my local machine and BitNami is listed in the Codex as one of the solutions… that’s how I found out about them.

    Has anyone else gone this route?

    When using Amazon for hosting (I think using EC2), how do you choose/allocate resources?

    – How much RAM?
    – How many cores?
    – Get 32-bit vs. 64-bit?

    Looks like RAM is pricey compared to dedicated servers (and even more so when comparing with VPS) but maybe WP multisite does not need that much RAM?

    I am looking for a configuration that would satisfy a WP multisite install that would scale to 1,000 subsites of mostly lower traffic photography related websites.

    Any insights or experience you have along those lines would be greatly appreciated!

    Please understand we CANNOT give you hosting recs (i.e. suggest one over another) and we have to close any posts that request that. This is NOT one of those posts, so it’s okay, just don’t start nitpicking, folks, or I delete posts ??

    WP doesn’t need that much ram, really, by itself. Once you get ANY site well trafficed, though, it’s an issue. And an inexact science. You can run most simple sites, even the well trafficed, on Shared Hosting. You can run most ‘busy’ or complicated sites on a VPS.

    I’d do 64 bit, personally, since it’s 20-flipping-11 and we should be there. It’ll upgrade better.

    I don’t use Amazon, but I am using cloud(like) hosting in a Smart VPS, with 880m memory, 75 G disk and 1 CPU. My host thinks I’ll need to up memory before CPUs.

    1 core, 512 megs of ram. Really. You don’t need beefy for what you’re doing.

    Thanks for the practical guidance; that’s surprisingly great news!!

    Without an accessible server monitoring and performance charting app, I had little idea on my private server utilization. It is good to know that WP demands a lot less of the server than I initially thought.

    @ipstenu, related to 32-bit vs. 64-bit – have you encountered any compatibility issues with sw you needed to install on the 64-bit server? I know that with desktop environments even now there are some issues with some apps/drivers on 64-bit Windows computers. Are there any such concerns related to servers?

    I have a choice of either and just set up cloud hosting using 32 bit to avoid those hypothetical problems but if you think my worry is unwarranted, I’ll redo the setup using a 64-bit cloud “server”.

    I had more SW issues with 32 bit than I have with 64.

    Hi Strategerizer,

    I wonder how that went. Did you proceed with bitnami cloud and EC2 ?

    What configuration did you actually need at the end? And how many sites have you managed to run with your configuration ? What is your cost for that kind of configuration(if that’s allowed to answer..if not then ignore).

    Do you found any disadvantages on running WordPress Multisite on the cloud? And are there any other advantages apart scalability ?
