• Hello guys,

as I am absolutely new to WordPress I’d like to ask you one quick question. Supposedely, all WordPress themes are released under one the somewhat same licence (am I right?), what can I do with the theme? May I edit or completely restruct and redesign existing themes downloaded from the internet? If not all of them, which one I can, and where to find them?

Thank you. I wouldn’t like to get in any trouble over this.

    M.

You can edit any of them to any extent. They are released under the latest GPL license. I am not a lawyer, but what I think you can’t do is change the GPL license or attribute the theme to yourself without drastic modifications.

That was quick and helpful, thanks! But anyway I suppose I have to leave the original author’s name in the footer at all times, right?

But this additional question comes to my mind, I see many “premium” themes on the internet – what do I buy with those? When it’s still GPL
Let’s just say – someone puts premium theme which he had bought before for others to download – am I allowed to use it when I just download it?

No you don’t have to the original author’s name in the footer. What I meant by attributing the theme to yourself without drastic modifications is you saying “this is my theme” and then maybe trying to distribute it to other people.

You can change absolutely every bit in a theme and that’s fine.
