• I just put up a new version of the always-wip-design for my blog, and wouldn’t mind a little feedback.

What I’m most curious about is the new sidebar design (there’s a screenshot of the previous version in a recent post).

I think the background image is too short for high resolutions, I’ll fix that asap, but how many people who use 1600×1200+ really browse in full screen? And it’s too gritty, but I havn’t come up with anything better so far.

What about ad placement? I decided to add some because I think a hobby that pays for itself is better than one that doesn’t, so I don’t want them to be too obtrusive. ??

Any opinions on the design are welcome.

I’d say almost none, apart from some absolute beginners, maybe.

As for comments on the design: It’s a bit “boxy” for my taste but I like the overall colour theme. It has an “anarchy” feel to it, which is probably the effect you’re after.

I like the color scheme a lot. However, I really think my preference would be for the two columns to be centered on the background image. I’m not sure if you intended this or not, but on my browser (FF 1.5.0.4), there is a small 1mm thick strip of images to the left of the left column that’s a bit distracting.

Otherwise, I think you are definately achieving the look you’re after.

Seems busy. The harsh red/black/white colours give a gritty feeling to it, but there’s not enough white space around the content to make it stand out.

I do like the two columns you’re using though.

It appears that your google ads column is a bit too narrow, or that the “main content” column a bit too wide, it would fit better if it wasn’t overlapping the black part of the background image. My 2 cents.

I can agree on the boxiness. My main concern was to give both the main content and the sideblog room while still keeping them separated. At first I tried background colors, but couldn’t find anything that felt right at the moment. How about keeping it as it is, but softening it a bit with rounded corners?
