    Hi All,

I need some help. We have a website https://www.shapelandscaping.co.nz which a web developer has made for us. We can login through https://www.shapelandscaping.co.nz/wp-login.php and edit some things, but not very much at all. My question is; What do I need to do to get full access to change things on this website, such as add new pages, change fields in a contact form, and have full control of our website? I am happy to do online tutorials and teach myself everything, I just need someone to point me in the right direction. Currently when I log in to the above URL it allows me to go to appearance>editor and see all the templates down the right hand side (index.php, template.about.php etc etc) and I can edit these themes but I feel it’s restricted me somehow. Am I right? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you log in to WordPress dashboard with the user name “admin” you will have full access to manage/edit your website.

make sure to get the full hosting server access data – username(s) and password(s) – for FTP or cpanel, database, etc, and also the access to the domain name registry, from the developer, and make sure you have an account on your WordPress site with user role ‘administrator’ with matching username and password (the username does not need to be ‘admin’, and having a username of ‘admin’ does not guarantee full aceess).

As Michael says, this is not necessarily the case. Usernames can be anything, it’s the role assigned to a username that counts.

Have you asked the developer why they haven’t given you the access you would like? Are they also looking after your hosting, and/or performing ongoing work for you? (It’s not uncommon to lock down sites to a certain extent if a developer is going to do regular maintenance work on it and wishes to control who can do what, do avoid someone ‘breaking’ the site). If this is the case they may grant you access upon request.

    Hi,

I’m struggling to find my wp-admin username and password, as my web developer set up my website and did not provide me with these details. The web developer now gone AWOL. Is there any way of finding out the username/email address attributed to the wp-admin so that I can do a password recovery?

    Many thanks
    Ash.

No replies too Ash? I have the same problem, developer gone and the password that I have does not give me full access to the dashboard the appearance tab is not visible. If anyone can advise how do I reclaim the admin role, do I make changes in the PHP files or the database or both? any help would be much appreciated!
