Developing an Advanced Search

In summary: you know how a comma between terms in a url is parsed by wp as an “OR” while a plus symbol is parsed as an “AND”. Is there a way to have parse_request() or some othe action / filter hook parse a minus sign in the argument list as a “NOT IN” when it builds the query args?
