The short of the long is I deleted my SQL database this morning and created a new one b/c I was having a hard time logging into WP. I had spent all yesterday trying to successfully change my url from strongmamabirth.com/wp to strongmamabirth.com, and in the process of doing all that, i could not log back in and it screwed everything up. so today, i thought I could just reinstall WP and my theme into a new database and then copy my previous wp content folder into my root directory and all would be well. BIG FAIL. I thought just keeping a back up of my WP Content folder and my config file would be enough. I am so clueless about how all this works that I am dangerous to myself, obviously. Nothing I tried yesterday from the WP support forums worked in getting me logged back in (that is probably b/c I didn’t fully understand what I was doing and messed up in the process), and I decided just starting from scratch this morning would be best. I backed up my WP directory from the old database when my web site was working perfectly yesterday. Today, I reinstalled WP and my theme into the root directory, not a wp directory. Into a new database, that is.

Now, I can log into my site just fine and everything is peachy, except it looks brand new. there is no hint of the theme changes or modifications I made. Even after copying over my old wp content folder.

I have realized that not backing up my old database before deleting it was an error. Thankfully, my webhost has a backup copy that they will restore for me.

Can anyone tell me what I should do next, once my old database is restored? B/c I believe my brain is fried.

I should add that I didn’t have any posts or comments..I had just made my theme the way I wanted and added text to pages and tweaked with theme settings. And I had uploaded images.

Is any of that in my wp content folder that I made copies of?

Never mind! I know now where to start. It seems, when I get my old database back, I need to export using the export tool, correct?

My heart goes out to you. Deleted database, wow.

Yea that backup from the host, that is good.

Do you need to go into your themes settings and renable your theme, to use instead of the default?

To backup your database, you can use the database export facility, yes. Some hosts let you make a copy of the database, so you don’t have to download it to have a backup.

Rejoice! Rejoice! I will forever love my host. They backed up my database! It is back, and I can log in now. Hooray!! I learned a very valuable lesson. So, the first thing I will do is back up/copy my database. I can download and copy, so that’s good. And, all of my content is in the right place! All I have to do now is tweak with some of the images.

So, actually, I did not need to re-install my theme.

Whew. I don’t know how the magic of the internet works, but thank heavens, everything appears to work now!

Awesome – so glad to hear that ?? And yes, hooray for your host!
