I’ve been looking this up without much luck, especially since a recent catastrophic crash in which we had to rely on a WAY too old backup to restore the site – what is the difference between backing up a WP site with the standard Tools/Export into XML file, and using the WP-DB-Backup plugin? What is missed out that needs to be backed up elsewhere, and will there be sufficient info in either without having to get into phpMyAdmin (I’m clearly not a database guy…)

    Thanks!

  • The WXR file from Tools->Export is essentially an XML file with your posts, pages, users, categories, tags. Your options/widget data is not backed up.

A WP-DB-Backup is a backup of the database tables. Essentially this is the same thing you could get by using phpMyAdmin to backup your database.

If I had to choose which one I would want in case of a catastrohpe, it would be the WP-DB-Backup.

Neither one of these methods backup your WordPress files meaning the programs, themes, plugins, and uploads. Typically you use FTP to backup and restore these files.

So read WordPress Backups and learn to backup both the database and your files.
