Different Default Pic Based on Category

  • I have 3 product categories for chairs: Low Back, High Back, and Stools. Is it possible to create one product (with or without variations), but change the picture that shows in the category list view based on what category you’re looking at?

    For instance, let’s say you have a chair called the Izzo Chair. The Izzo chair has 3 variations, and is available as a Low Back, a High Back or a Stool. So technically, only the Stool variation is in the Stools category.

    I don’t mind a user clicking on any Izzo variation and ending up on a page that shows all the Izzo variations. But what I’d like to avoid is a user clicking on the Stools category to narrow down their choices, and seeing a picture of the Low Back Izzo. Yes, Izzo is available as a stool, but the default pic is the Low Back. Any good way to handle this?

    I’m guessing after looking around that the simple way of asking my question is: Is there any way to make Category part of the variation of a product? Or do all variations have to inherit the Categories of the product?

    Variations can’t have a category or a tag of their own. Probably the only way you can do what you want would be to make separate simple products, each in its relevant category.

    You can show a connection between these separate products by a common tag or by links in the product description. Also, plugins are available to allow customers to search by brand.
