• I’m just starting with WordPress. Quick question: Is it possible to have different designs for the homepage (index.php) and the permalink pages (that is, the permanent archive of the page)? If so, how do I go about designing and designating a separate design/layout for the permalink page.
    Thanks!

  • I am trying to figure out how to do the exact same thing.

…And I just figured out how.
Design a new template, then go to your options > permalinks panel.
Scroll down to the part where is says:
“Use the template tags above to create a virtual site structure:”
    /index.php/archives/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/
change the index.php in that box to [your_template.php] and voil?? …
I think. It worked for me.
I hope someone who actually have more knowhow in WP can confirm that this _is_ a proper way to do it. ?? Me, I am just lucky sometimes.

I think you have it. Here are my partial notes on doing same:
