    Hello,

I’ve installed wordpress to a subdirectory on my domain, but when I try to log in with the username admin and password provided, I receive the error message, “Directory Listing Denied. This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.” I can go to https://www.girlpaladin.com/leftunsaid/index.php and see my WordPress blog, but if I leave off the index.php, I get the same Diretory Listing Denied error.

I’ve unstalled WordPress, reinstalled it, tried different subdirectories; same deal each time.

I searched this support forum for that error, and contacted my webspace provider, since that seemed to be the common recommendation. My webspace provider helpfully replied back that they do not provide customer support for WordPress and that I should contact WordPress support. However, they know the software works on their server because others have reported using it successfully.

My webspace provider is https://www.freedom2surf.net. I’d very much appreciate your help in figuring this out.

    Thanks in advance,

    -Lauren

If we assume that your error message is caused by an attempt to display a Directory Listing as occurred for the person in this thread (see link below), then I think the solution will be the same: in an .htaccess file.

Thanks for the reply. Am I trying to display a directory listing? All I know is I installed wordpress into a directory called leftunsaid on girlpaladin.com. I’m just trying to get girlpaladin.com/leftunsaid to work without having to type index.php.

I don’t see an .htaccess file either in the root of my website or in my wordpress directory. I tried creating one and first added the DirectoryIndex info and uploaded that to both places, first root, and when that didn’t work, the wordpress directory. Still no change that I could see, so I added the # BEGIN WordPress <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> section to the .htaccess file and uploaded that to the root. No change after that.

Is it possible that the root isn’t where I think it is? When I use FTP, I have to upload to /web/content. Is that not the root? I don’t have access to / or /web. My webspace provider doesn’t offer a control panel where I can change things like the directory index or default pages, although they do have phpmyadmin for database management.

Everything works if I manually type index.php, otherwise I get the Directory Listing Denied error. What else can I try on my end?

Thanks again for trying to help. I’m sorry if there’s a lot about all of this that I’m not understanding.

Your host needs to be configured to recognize index.php as a default file. Without it, you’re sunk (as you’ve already noticed).

You can either try to accomplish that with the .htaccess methods (doesn’t work on Windows IIS hosts though) or contact your host for help. They’ll need to understand it isn’t a WordPress issue, you just need their server to look for index.php.

Is there any way to determine if the host is Windows IIS? Short of asking the host company, I mean.

I checked (using your URL in the first post here). You’re indeed on IIS.

    Content-Length 218
    Content-Type text/html
    Server Microsoft-IIS/6.0
    X-Powered-By ASP.NET
    MicrosoftOfficeWebServer 5.0_Pub

Thanks very much. Back to the host I go *fingers crossed*.

Quick follow up, just because I personally hate loose ends.

It took one month and 8 correspondences with my web host customer services, but they finally resolved my original problem.

.php was added as a default to my website. That’s their wording, not mine. A default what, I don’t know, but whatever they did, it works. I no longer need to type “index.php” at the end of my url. No more Directory Listing Denied errors.

I look forward to finally being able to use WordPress on my website.

    ??

(Apologies for dredging up an old thread.)

Aha!!! Thank you for this post! I have been scouring the internet for something on this. One last attempt this morning led me here.

I can elaborate a little more on this. It is very simple. All I had to do was add “index.php” as a default document to my website. There is a listing of allowed default documents such as “default.asp”, “default.htm”, etc. I added “index.php” and voila – I now have access to my blog directory. No more directory listing denied.

Im Soory to post this BUT the think is i got the index page to work But when i try to go into a page or a catagory i have a “page not found” error and the websire address that i get is like this :

    https://eshkolyavne.org.il/index.php/category/general/

and not like a normal link:
    https://eshkolyavne.org.il/category/general/

    why the index.php show up?!….
i used the method to make the host recognize index.php as a default file and that helped me with the “Directory Listing” error

but now this comes up.. i called my host and they as allways say that the problem is with me
