• Hi all,

I posted a week or so ago and since had a change of plan with everything.

I am still planning/designing etc and haven’t started building the site yet as there’s a few things i need to find out first.

I’m looking to build a site similar to the likes of checkatrade. So a directory site.

There will be a profile page for trades to list what services they offer, showcase work etc. These would be set up with a membership (eventually)

A customer wouldn’t need a profile. All they would do is fill out a form with the work they need doing (drop down menu and text boxes). The relevant trades, that have signed up, within a certain radius will then receive a text or email of said job and could contact the customer.

So would need a registration page, login page and an account/profile page for the trades.

I would also like customers to be able to search for trades in their area just like you would any normal directory.

Are there any plug ins out there that would work well for this?

    thanks in advance

    Jay

  • To build a directory site like the one you described, you can use a combination of WordPress plugins and themes to achieve the desired functionality. Here’s a list of recommended plugins and themes to help you get started:

    1. Directory Theme: A dedicated directory theme would provide you with the foundation for your site. Some popular options include ListingPro, MyListing, and Listify. These themes come with built-in directory features, which can save you time and effort when setting up your site.
    2. WP Job Manager: WP Job Manager is a lightweight job listing plugin that can be used to manage job listings and allow tradespeople to submit their profiles. You can use it in combination with a directory theme to create a seamless experience for both tradespeople and customers.
    3. GeoDirectory: GeoDirectory is a powerful directory plugin that lets you create location-based directories with advanced search and filtering options. It can help you build a directory where customers can search for tradespeople based on their location.
    4. WP Simple Pay: WP Simple Pay is a user-friendly plugin for accepting payments on your site. You can use it to set up memberships and subscriptions for tradespeople.
    5. WPForms or Gravity Forms: To create the forms for customers to submit their job requests, you can use a form plugin like WPForms or Gravity Forms. Both plugins offer advanced features such as conditional logic, file uploads, and integration with other services.
    6. Profile Builder: Profile Builder is a plugin that helps you create front-end user registration, login, and profile editing pages. You can use it to manage tradespeople’s accounts and profiles.
    7. Email and SMS Notifications: To send email and text notifications to tradespeople when a new job is posted, you can use a service like Twilio for SMS notifications and a plugin like WP Mail SMTP for email notifications.

These plugins and themes should provide you with the necessary tools to create a directory site similar to Checkatrade. You may need to customize and configure them to fit your specific requirements, but with some tweaking, they should work well for your project.

    Thanks Linards,

Can you still use plugins on a hosted site or is it better to host yourself?

Sorry, I’m new to wordpress after having only used bluepark and godaddy for previous sites.

    Thanks

    Hey Jay,

You can use plugins on hosted WordPress sites, but it depends on the hosting plan. With self-hosted WordPress (www.ads-software.com), you can use any plugin. On WordPress.com, it varies:

    1. Free/Personal plans: No third-party plugins.
    2. Premium plan: Limited pre-approved plugins.
    3. Business/eCommerce plans: Install any plugin.

For your directory site, go for a self-hosted site or Business/eCommerce on WordPress.com. Managed hosting like WordPress.com is convenient for beginners, while self-hosting gives you more control.

Hope this helps! If you’ve got more questions, just ask!

Due to the differences between the various site hosting plans offered at wordpress.com and the self-hosted and self-installed version of WordPress supported here, you should probably ask WordPress.com support instead: https://wordpress.com/support/help-support-options/
