I’ve noticed that wp-Typography replaces the characters “fi” with a single ligature character indiscriminately, even in <code> blocks. Is this a bug? Can it be disabled?

The only thing that might be affecting (or appear to be inserting) ligatures is the Safari hyphenation bug workaround. You can try disabling that in the “Browser support” section of the “Hyphenation” tab.

(However, that’s a pure styling issue – wp-Typography does not add any ligatures in the served HTML.)

That did it, thanks! I forgot to mention I am using Chrome.

Is there any way to disable or omit that inline CSS in elements that are set to be ignored?

Not right now. I think in such a case you would probably be better served by including the fix in your regular stylesheet.
