Disable Images from being treated as a "Post"

When I add a new image to my gallery and then publish it the image is then treated as a “post” and is picked up on the homepage and the out of the box new posts widget. I only want the images to appear in the gallery (where the code is used) vs. treated as a post. How can I do that?
