• Hi, folks.
I started today trying to update to 4.8.2, but update kept failing due to inconsistent file permissions. One of the online forums suggested disabling all plugins to see if that helped; I did bulk action “disable” on the dashboard, and my site went into “”Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance.” That was an hour and a half ago, and I’m getting nervous.
I should also say that I’m in way over my head, here. I used an installer to set up my WordPress site, and when y’all start talking about logging into the server and editing the config file, my head starts to spin.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Who is hosting your website?
If you’re using yahoo, log in to the control panel->open file manager->browse to the main directory where your site files are. You’ll see folders called “wp-admin”, “wp-content”, “wp-includes” and then a list of other files.

In that list of files, look for one called “.maintenance” (no quotes) and delete it.

Clear your browser cache and try reloading the page.

If you’re not using yahoo to host you’re account, let me know what you are using and I’ll try to help with that one.

I’m on Yahoo Small Business. When I go to File Manager to main directory, can find no file called .maintenance.

And if I click on “View” for any of the files, I get the “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance” message again.

This is what is in my main directory:

    wp-admin (folder)
    wp-content (folder)
    wp-includes (folder)
    homepage-index.php
    index.html
    index.php
    license.txt
    readme.html
    18 of temp-write-test-XXXXXXXXXX
    wp-activate.php
    wp-blog-header.php
    wp-comments-post.php
    wp-config-sample.php
    wp-config.php
    wp-config2.php
    wp-cron.php
    wp-links-opml.php
    wp-load.php
    wp-login.php
    wp-mail.php
    wp-settings.php
    wp-signup.php
    wp-trackback.php
    xmlrpc.php

Sometimes when you load the file manager it hides some files. When you click the “file manager” link, does a small window come up with various display options? You’d be looking for a checkbox or some other type of option selector that would say something like “Show hidden files”. Be sure to check that box before opening it.

IF you see the .maintenance folder, delete it. If not, we’ll try something else next.

Okay, I fiddled and got a fix to work, but now I’m unsure if it is a good idea.

I edited wp-settings.php and “commented out” the command to check whether site was in maintenance mode.

That seems a little sketchy – will it make site unstable?

It’s generally not a good idea to edit the core WordPress files. It might make it act oddly to users the next time you do an update.

What happens when you uncomment it?

You might want to consider re-installing the update. It kind of sounds like something didn’t work right when you did it earlier. You can do it from inside your WordPress admin updates page.
