disabling first and last names is not reliable

    We disable editing of first names and last names, but the users can still edit them on their account pages.

    This is in 2.5.4, we haven’t been able to absorb 2.6 yet so maybe its been fixed.

    Also note, some members cannot edit their profiles, other can.

    You can remove first and last name from being displayed and edited at the Account page by these settings from the Account Tab guide.

    Add first name & last name fields

    This option allows you to show/hide first and last name fields from appearing on the account general tab.

    Disable First & Last Name fields

    This option is for whether to allow users to change their first and last name on the account page.

    Please re-read the ticket text. We use the setting, but it doesn’t work reliably. So cutting and pasting the documentation isn’t really a resolution.
