Disappearing categories

    Hi all the categories on my blog are suddenly not there- it says no categories on the home page. in the dashboard it says i have 8 categories but in the category section theres nothing. when i try and re-add these categories wp says they already exist. i just got 3 comments recently that were spam i deleted them is this the problem?
