I am a complete ignoramus, working as a volunteer for a non-profit organization. Our website was built several years ago by a person who is no longer involved. Our website has disappeared. How do I get it back?

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • When I call up the domain you mentioned, I can see a website that looks completely normal to me. Why do you think it has disappeared?

Please contact your host. Your hosting plan may have expired.

When I click on any link from the home page, EXCEPT DONATION, I get this message:

    Not Found

The requested URL was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    I have contacted the host.

I suspect that the only thing missing is the .htaccess file that enables the “pretty” URLs. The backend seems to be accessible. Log in there and go to Settings > Permalinks. Simply click the Save button there – it should work again immediately.

If not, the hoster’s support would probably be really helpful.

When you say “Log in there” where do you mean? When I click on “About” or any other link except Donate from the home page, I get the error.

You can log in in the backend of your WordPress under /wp-login.php or /wp-admin/. Both are accessible to me.

This is what I get: file:///wp-admin/

    ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND

    Your file couldn’t be accessed

It may have been moved, edited, or deleted.

    file:///wp-login.php

    Your file couldn’t be accessed

It may have been moved, edited, or deleted.

    ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND

I meant that you call up the path behind your domain. I didn’t actually want to write it directly like this again: https://childrenstherapygroup.org/wp-login.php – here you have to enter the login data you know. If you do not have these, please contact the person who manages the project for you. If this is not the case, you may be able to get access via the hoster’s support.

Thank you for being patient with me. The log in and password are correct as far as I know (they match what I wrote down several years ago). This is the message I get: Error:?The username?Xf5Itsbqgp?is not registered on this site. If you are unsure of your username, try your email address instead.

I have tried the email address associated and get this message: Error:?There is no account with that username or email address.

Then the access data you know no longer seems to be correct. You can reset them as described here: https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/reset-your-password/#through-phpmyadmin – if you need help with this, contact your hoster’s support.

Don’t worry! I can guide you through the steps to try and get your non-profit organization’s website back online. Here’s a step-by-step approach:1. Check Domain Registration

First, check if your domain name is still registered:

    • Visit a domain registrar website (like GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.) and use their WHOIS lookup tool.
    • If the domain has expired, you may need to renew it. If it’s still active, make sure you have access to the registrar account to manage settings.

    2. Check Hosting Account

Determine where your website was hosted:

    • If you know the hosting provider (like Bluehost, HostGator, etc.), try to access the account. You may need the login credentials.
    • If you don’t have access, contact the hosting provider’s support for assistance. They might help you recover the account if you can provide proof of ownership (like organization details or payment records).

    3. Look for Backups

If you can access the hosting account:

    • Check if there are any automatic backups available. Most hosting providers offer backup services.
    • If backups exist, you can restore the website to a previous state.

    4. Use the Wayback Machine

If the website has disappeared but the domain is still registered, you can try the Wayback Machine:

    • Enter your website URL to see if there are archived versions.
    • You can download content from there to help recreate the site.

    5. Rebuild the Website

    If recovery options don’t work:

    • Consider rebuilding the site using a website builder like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace. These platforms are user-friendly and offer templates.
    • If your organization has a social media presence, use that to inform your audience about the situation while rebuilding the website.

    6. Seek Help

    • If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider reaching out to local volunteers, friends, or community members with web development skills.
    • Websites like Upwork or Fiverr can connect you with freelancers who can assist with website recovery or rebuilding.

    7. Engage with the Organization

Keep your non-profit organization informed about the steps you’re taking. Engaging volunteers or members who might have technical expertise can also be beneficial.Summary

Start by checking domain and hosting accounts to see if you can regain access. If not, utilize online resources like the Wayback Machine and consider rebuilding. Don’t hesitate to ask for help; many people are willing to volunteer their expertise for a good cause.

The answer from @georgehenry667 misses the point. I would still recommend that you contact your hoster’s support. What does he say in the meantime?

I am so very grateful to you for your help, kindness and patience. It was an issue with the person who hosts and it is resolved now. Thank you.
