I was very excited to see the addition of the Events List block to TEC last week, but that quickly turned to disappointment. I don’t love the other plugin in the space, and hoped that this would provide the perfect solution for my fairly simple but frequent needs to show a list of upcoming events.

First, there are two pretty clear bugs:

    1. The block appears in the “Uncategorized” Category of blocks.
    2. The Legacy Widget block also appears in the block inserter when The Events Calendar is activated.

Next, there is the odd implementation of it that can lead to some fairly unexpected behaviors. Since the block is in an iframe in the editor, the styles applied to lead to some front-end styles getting picked up in the editor that I did not expect.

Finally, the total lack of options is disappointing. I assume there is a PRO upgrade that adds those(?), but I was hoping for at least the ability to control the number of events if nothing else. (Other wishes that feel like bare minimums are setting the “Upcoming Events” title, showing featured images, and controlling the behavior when there are no upcoming events.)

Hope this feedback is constructive, and I look forward to future updates that make this block viable.

  • Hey @mrwweb

Thank you for taking the time to reach out.
You are right, we will definitely squash those 2 glitches.

With that in mind, on a personal level, I really like the Legacy Widget block ??

Would you mind sharing a screenshot of such unexpected styles being picked up? Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

As for the features of the Events List block itself, you should totally be able to control the number of events using the “Show” option (integer) of the block. If that option is not displaying for you when you click on the block to edit it, it sounds like there might be a glitch.

You should also be able to modify the Upcoming title with the free version of that block (when you click on the block). I wonder if this is not some type of conflict. If possible, knowing which theme you are using might help narrow this down.

However, to your point, the Pro add-on does enhance that block with a few additional options: choose which element to display in the block (price, venue, street, city, state, postal code, country, phone, and organizer), and some filtering by category or tags.

For what it’s worth, we will be bringing more enhancements to the block editor offerings of The Events Calendar over the next little while, so stay tuned!

    Cheers,
    Geoff

    Hi @geoffbel,

Sorry for the delayed response. Somehow I didn’t get the notification of your response.

Regarding the title and number of events options, I’m not quite sure how I missed those (maybe you’re right about a temporary conflict), but I see them now. That’s great!

Here’s a screenshot of bad styles in the block. That light bubble background is coming from my front-end styles that are not enqueued in the editor. By implementing it that way, it also becomes impossible (I think?) to modify the styles of the block in the editor, which I’m assuming I would want to do if I used this block.

It seems like a custom block using the <ServerSideRender /> component would make more sense than the Legacy Widget implementation here. I assume the cat’s already out of the bag, but maybe it’s not to late to change?

    @mrwweb

    Thank you for writing back.
I am super happy that you found the title and number of events option ??

As for the bad styles in the block, that is surprising indeed.
We would love to be able to reproduce this. My hunch is that it might be theme-specific (but I might be wrong). Would you mind telling us which theme you are using (no obligation, of course)?

As for the implementation suggestion, I will totally bring it up with our engineering team. I really appreciate your input.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Sorry for the delay in responding. Holidays + life.

The uncategorized list widget issue is resolved, but the Legacy Widget is still in the post editor block list and the extra styles still appear in the Event List block.

In terms of the Event List styles, it’s picking up from the theme that are inlined in the head of the block editor. I’m using a child theme of Chaplin and it’s hosted on WordPress.com.

    Hey @mrwweb

First off, thank you for replying!
Secondly our apologies for not responding sooner.

Would you mind adding my handle (@geoffbel) in your replies to make sure this doesn’t happen again?

Regarding the Legacy Widget blocks displaying, I just escalated things in the hopes of getting at least a snippet to remove those.

As for the styles, how are you inlining them? Via the child theme? Some other method?
Basically, I would love to be able to reproduce the issue to provide you with a fix or a workaround.

    Best,
    Geoff

    Hi @mrwweb,

Since we haven’t heard from you in a while on this topic we will assume that the problem was fixed or is no longer applicable and with that I will mark this as resolved.

If that is not the case, please let me know, and I will gladly remove the “Resolved” tag and try to help you further. Or you can create a new topic with the issue if you prefer.

    Best Regards,
