Display content below thumbnail

    i want to display the lead or the first like 50 letters from the portfolio item below the thumbnail.
    In the end ther should be the image then the title and at the end the lead (or the first 50 letters) from the item. I actually got that you can get the title with $item->getTitle(); but i dont know how i can get the lead or the begin of the content.
