I am slightly confused with what you are asking, but currently there is no way to put extra code on the menu items.

Are you wanting the ability to add small images next to populated menu items? I could add a hook to allow you to add custom html to the menu output, if this is what you are requesting.

What do you mean by “querying the category”?

You can modify the the arguments from wp_nav_menu ($before, $before_link) per item using the following filter jcs/menu_item_args
