Display posts as a grid of thumbnails

I’d like to have the posts on my main page display as a grid of thumbnails. I’ve tried doing this using Automatic Post Thumb plug-in and fooling around with the CSS to make the post css float left and match the thumbnail size. This hasn’t worked for me. Maybe I should be adjusting the PHP files. Any ideas or tips?
