• I’ve been looking through the template tags on WordPress Codex and I can’t find a tag that would allow me to display stories/articles by category.

Is there a way to do this, and how?

I want to display four different categories on my main index page.

If a plug-in is needed, I am using 1.2.2, the latest stable release. There’s gotta be a way to do this, it seems pretty simple.

I’m probably misunderstanding your question, but, all of that is in the default WordPress 1.2.2, it’s in the sidebar, navbar, or whatever the developers here call it. However, I don’t think it is visible until the category has an entry. There is no text visible, just a link that when clicked on returns a listing of titles and text in that particular category.

You should be able to cut and paste the appropriate function out of the index.php and place it anywhere you want it. I’d give you an example of the exact piece of php code that wordpress uses to do this, but today that particular computer is off. My memory is poor!
