display title or excerpt, then link to full content

    another newbie question, sorry, but one i can’t seem to figure out or find the answer to…

    i’d like index.php to display only titles or excerpts, and then have a ‘read more’ link display the full post.

    if i alter
    – the_content(_(‘Read more’)); to
    – the_excerpt(_(‘Read more’));

    i get […] at the end the end of the excerpt, and clicking on the title brings up the post in the same format – excerpted. and with no ‘read more’ link.

    can anyone explain this concept to me, or if it’s even doable? will i need to create a ‘display post’ subpage?
