I’m seeing two different behaviors with the Display WordPress Posts Widget:

On one site, https://lelacappelle.com go to the CONTACTS page https://lelacappelle.com/contact-us/

I’ve placed the widget on that page in the bottom/left Sidebar. The first three posts do NOT show the social/sharing icons, the following two posts DO show the icons.

On the other site, https://lakepath.com/ all of the Posts have the social/sharing icons on all posts.

I thought maybe the Schema markup might be the issue, but there does not seem to be any patter/relationship to posts with/without it.

For/what/it’s/worth, I kind of like the look without the social/sharing icons as it appears a bit cleaner. But I don’t see/know that we have user-level control over whether/not those icons show.

Can anyone identify why the social/sharing icons don’t show on the first three posts in the Display WordPress Posts Widget at https://lelacappelle.com/contact-us/ ?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

It might be because you defined a custom excerpt for all three posts. Could you try to edit one of the older posts and add a custom excerpt there as well?

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Jeremy… thanks for the input.

The “short answer” is that the Custom Manual Excerpt did not seem to make a difference. I’ve detailed it below should you want/need the “long answer” ??

Very odd behavior… I can’t seem to pin it down to anything.

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks,

    John

    DETAIL:
First One: DID have a Custom Manual Excerpt (below).
This excerpt was showing. I removed it and the body text now flows through, but the Social Buttons are still not showing.

Second One: Did NOT have a Custom Manual Excerpt
Lake Effect Snow in Southwest Michigan
    https://lakepath.com/lake-effect-snow-southwest-michigan/

Third One: Did NOT edit; Did NOT have a Custom Manual Excerpt
Social Buttons are showing, but now I think I may have misspoke in my original query: I think it was only the first “TWO” posts (not “three”) that were having the issue.
    Thunderstorms on Lake Michigan

Fourth One: Did NOT Edit; Did NOT have a Custom Manual Excerpt.

Fifth One: I edited this one; adding a Custom Manual Excerpt
Social Buttons are STILL showing after edit.

    Thanks for all the details.

Do you happen to use the More tag on any of these posts?

    (@johnnadeau)

    Funny you should mention that!

I was just reading some of your older/informative posts last night about using the More Tag to control Newsfeeds as well.

But I haven’t started using it yet.

I noted that almost the full text is brought into the Widget at https://lelacappelle.com/contact-us/ so it doesn’t appear to be a more tag issue. I also went into edit mode on the Lake Page: https://lakepath.com/lake-michigan-never-fails/ to assure the More Tag wasn’t buried in there anywhere.

    Alright!

Could you then check if these posts use a different Post Format?

    Thanks!

P.S.: I would check that myself, but WordFence appears to block me from accessing lakepath.com:

    Good Morning Jeremy,

My apologies… you’re the last guy I’d want to block ?? I changed it for future reference.

Resolution (pending your review): In the end, I had to clear the WordFence cache on https://LeLacAppelle.com.

For your reference here’s a summary of what they were originally:

    Post Type | Post Name
    1) Image | https://lakepath.com/lake-michigan-never-fails/
    2) Image | https://lakepath.com/lake-effect-snow-southwest-michigan/
    3) Standard | https://lakepath.com/thunderstorms-lake-michigan/
    4) Standard | https://lakepath.com/really-michigan-tropical-island/
    5) Standard | https://lakepath.com/begins-southwest-michigan/

    Steps:
Changed all Post Types to “Standard” but no change.
Cleared my browser cache but no change.
Cleared WordFence cache on LakePath but no change
Cleared WordFence cache on LeLacAppelle and it resolved issue.
Changed Post 1 & 2 Post Types back to Image Type, cleared all caches, and Social Sharing icons are consistent across all Posts in the Display WordPress Posts

Jeremy, Social Sharing Icons are now visible, I’ll let you mark it as resolved if all looks right on your end.

    THANKS for your help !

WAIT… I pulled the trigger too soon ??

I had turned the two posts in question back into Image Types, cleared all caches, and the Social Icons were still showing.

I checked back an hour later and the Social Icons were gone!

So maybe it IS the Image Post Type that’s causing the issue? Is there a a delay/cache in between editing a post and the feed into JetPack’s Display WordPress Posts feature?

    Jetpack Mechanic ??

I had forgotten about this, sorry it took me so long to remember: it’s specific to Twenty Fourteen and its Ephemera Widget. Sharing buttons and Likes are disabled on all Posts using a specific Post Format, in that widget.

Is there a a delay/cache in between editing a post and the feed into JetPack’s Display WordPress Posts feature?

There shouldn’t be any delay, but that data might be cached in your browser. It might be worth trying to clear your browser cache.

No problem… there’s a lot to remember ! At least I know now what is causing the behavior. Thanks !

For what it’s worth, I did clear my browser cache, as well as the WordFence cache on both sites, but it took a few minutes for the Social Icons to show back up (or disappear, depending upon the test I was running).

Re the Ephemera Widget, I do have related question but I will post shortly in a separate question for clarity.
