Our new update was done with the best of intentions.
We had to make several hard decisions in the process, but I know they are the right decisions to ensure a sustainable future for the plugin.
I wrote a detailed blog post here discussing our challenges.
Even if we didn’t add a premium version, the old plugin dashboard had to be restricted and certain data points had to be removed because we were simply running out of API quota every day which was breaking the dashboard for many users.
We added a modestly priced premium version, so those who want to keep the heavy API quota items like real-time reports, detailed dashboard etc, can pay to upgrade. We also added additional advanced reports like Search Console report etc that didn’t exist previously to make it more enticing for users to support us.
Since the inception of this plugin, it has been 100% free. We relied entirely on the donation model which simply isn’t scalable as we have full-time team members working on the product.
Our hope is that the introduction of a modestly priced premium plugin will allow us to continue the work that we do on the free plugin to helps over a million website owners see the stats that matter.
