Distinction between Abandoned Cart and Completed Payment is not working right

I had at least 2 customers who finished the payment and got the abandoned cart emails anyways, and I can confirm this in my email logs, that the abandoned cart sequence was sent after the woocommerce order confirmation.
Also orders that show up with failed payment in WooCommerce did not get the cart abandoned sequence. So it seems the recognition of an abandoned cart is not working the way it should. Any help on that?
