• I have a WordPress site that is available only on my corporate intranet, not visible on the internet. Test messages from Postman SMTP are delivered fine. But notifications sent when posts or forum comments are generated are not making it to any destination. I can see the deliveries in the Postman SMTP Email log. But I get the following bounce messages:

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
    [email protected]

    Technical details of permanent failure:
DNS Error: Address resolution of campfire.nmcounties.org. failed: Domain name not found

It is true that from the point of view of the smtp.gmail.com servers on the internet, that campfire.nmcounties.org does not exist.

Am I required to expose the WordPress server to the internet for Postman SMTP to work?

I am still struggling with this error, and am now working with Google tech support.

They said to check with WP tech support, and that’s what this here post is.

In case it helps anybody who follows my trail, here is my conversation with Google tech support:

I understand you are having issues with a 3rd party plugin from WordPress. From what I understand this mail doesn’t route through Google.

    Yes.

Have you tried contacting WordPress about this issue?

No, and given that it is a free plugin I don’t know if I can get support.

Okay but the plugin doesn’t interact with Google Apps email in any way in regards to delivery.

I think it does though. Under the covers I think it uses googleapis.com.

Okay but it is 3rd party and it isn’t something that is really covered by our support.
Allow me 2 to 5 minutes to see if there is anything I can find that may help you.

Thanks. Basically I need to know if a gmail client has to actually exist on the internet. It seems like Gmail is doing a DNS lookup of the sending host (campfire.nmcounties.org) which is not defined on the internet.

Looks like you would need to have it on the internet, since it requires a connection the mail server. And I’m not sure if this their own mail server, or your Google Apps.
So it is definitely doing a lookup of DNS.

Are you saying that the Google API requires a connection to our server?

    It isn’t the API.
The API is only for connection to the account, OAuth.
The App itself needs to be able to connect to mail servers.

It can see your servers, I have checked that. And I did the OAuth thing, with a client ID and client secret.

Okay, unfortunately this isn’t part of our service. So there isn’t much we can do.
You would need to contact the App developer or support team.

OK, then. I will keep trying. Thanks Mary P.
