I installed a WordPress MultiSite on Linux Mint 17.3. I installed one but I don’t know how to connect to my WP install yet.

Question: Do I need my own FTP server?

    Thank you

  • Are you self hosting or paying for WordPress hosting? You can use FTP for many things and might make things easier to troubleshoot if the need ever arises.

The question isn’t really a yes/no if you do need access.

    Hi,
I have paid hosting for my sites, I FTP to them with FileZilla, and the sites are live.

I installed WP locally to learn WP better, to try to learn more advanced things – maybe even some coding – without destroying my live sites. I do not think that I will use the local sites for developing the live sites – too much could go wrong. The FTP server would only be for my local install at this point.

you can look into the free version of Desktop Server

@contentiskey, thanks! I have an FTP server set up – in Linux. I do not know how to connect it to my local WP install yet, or if I need to do so.
(I wanted to know if I need an FTP server – before I spend time on trying to set up the connection. I know nothing at this point.)

I am not a user of Filezilla FTP server
I use Filezilla FTP client everyday—very handy.

Another option for having a test environment is a STAGING area.
Some webhosting accounts include a staging server.

Ah, good idea about the staging server. Maybe that is an alternate area for me to mess around with the WP backend. I am not using it to do anything that will go live – it will have nothing to do with my live sites.

But I do already have a working WP MultiSite set up locally. I hate to waste it, or crash my host’s servers. I have vsftpd (FTP for Linux) on my local install.

(FileZilla is on my Windows PC for my live sites.)

Rephrase the original question: Must I have FTP access to work with WP on a local install?

    Excellent! Thanks for the link.

    I will close this thread.

Glad you got it resolved, great advice from the above posters!

To follow up on my original question, from the local/install forum: NO you do not need FTP to access a local install.

    Great news.
