• I am very confused about the featured image. Someone please step in and confirm if I have this right:

You upload a featured image size, there is no guidance to what that size should be unless the template creator tells you. I have seen both 1200×628 and 1200×630 as a middle-of the road choice. I have no idea why the 2 pixel difference. I have also seen 1200×900. So you basically end up with this rectangle in landscape view. When your “featured image” is seen in a “feed” or the “archive page” the theme will choose how it is displayed which means often cropping to a square mode. Some template may give you options to flex a bit on the cropping. Portrait view is rarely used.

SO OK NOBODY QUOTE WHAT I JUST SAID… this is just my observation of spending four hours on the internet trying to find an answer. I saw an attractive website with portrait featured images in the blog roll page, and thought I would do the same, but it appears nearly impossible. It looks like I need to become friends with my image getting cropped in WordPress?????

I will also add that the portrait/profile view appeared to be 400×600 pixels. Is that size recommended these days, or is everything going the route of bumping up the pixels higher in featured images?

Yes, it depends on the theme and will probably change from theme to theme.
