    Hi

This is more of a general question around ecommerce rel canonicals. For some products we are aiming at adding a rel canonical to the category pages to avoid similar/duplicate content issues.

However, I wondered if by doing that it means that those product pages would not be viable for the Google Merchant Centre?

    Many thanks,

    Rachael

    Hello Rachael,

Thanks for your question about the rel="canonical" tag. By default, Yoast SEO uses the product category URL as the canonical URL tag. So you won’t need to specify it exclusively.

For some products we are aiming at adding a rel canonical to the category pages to avoid similar/duplicate content issues.

When you do what you have described above, whatever you specify as the canonical URL will be reckoned with and indexed while the product URL or category URL will be ignored.

Please read rel=canonical: the ultimate guide before you make any changes.
