?????Do templates really need theme support?

I ran the Developer plugin on my template and it told me to add theme support for a custom header and custom background, my theme has it’s own ways of this and I do not need them, is there a way I can just disable them or do I need them? Because right now they’re as useful as a, well they’re not.
