do you need to know php to work wordpress templates?

Hi!

i am looking for a theme for a clients website and i am new to wordpress.
Was wondering if i need to find a theme for the client with the exact functionality he wants or if i could add this later without any programming knowledge such as php. i am a web designer so only use html and CSS, i have never touched php
