• We’re moving a site from Joomla Docman to WordPress. After using a migration tool all the documents (mostly PDF files, some .xls, some .ppt) are media and are attached to posts in categories.

I need to restrict access to some of those documents by category. I have Groups installed and am trying to figure out which add-ons I need. I think “Groups Restrict Categories” will work, but then do I also need the “Groups File Access” to keep people from getting to the uploaded PDF’s, xls, etc.? Will I have to assign the file to a group and then the post I attach it to?

Is there a way to just say a certain folder on the server belongs to a certain group?

    Hi,

If you’re using Groups Restrict Categories you will have the related posts protected but it will not protect attachments on those.

Using Groups File Access will not protect the attachments either – it only protects files that it handles directly. As it stores all files in one folder, you can’t map a group to a folder that it protects – although I agree that it would be very useful to have some folder hierarchy implemented in Groups File Access, currently it only uses one for all files. I would recommend you have a look at its documentation to see if it still could be an option for your requirements.

To protect the files you currently have as attachments, you would have to place them under GFA’s control (it has an import feature to make it easier) and it provides shortcodes that are quite convenient to render links to the files that a user has access to. You could even create a widget that shows all files available to a user so that you don’t have to add a shortcode on every page. Widgets Control provides content blocks which you could use for that purpose (there is also a premium version Widgets Control Pro which adds some features related to Groups).

I hope that helps you to get a better picture of what you could use based on Groups.

    Cheers
