  • On your WordPress admin dashboard click “Plugins” followed by “Add New” then type your desired plugin into the “Search” box. Say “hit counter” for example. Then click “Search Plugins”.

Alternatively, you can browse by tag or various other methods.

The thing is, I don’t want a wordpress plug-in, so how do I use it to find non-wordpress counters that do what I want them to do?

Like the hit counter that I described in my original post?

I’ve searched google, but I get all the spam, adware stuff that’s being peddled over the web, so I thought that I would make my search to a more targeted group of people who have been through all that already, and can provide me with useful information based on their own experiences.

Sorry if I didn’t make myself clear before.

Well, this is a WordPress forum so the context in which you are posting is one of WordPress coders and support folk who are used to finding WordPress plugins or writing WordPress plugins and hacks.

I mean, you might get lucky and someone here may have written a script to provide generic hit counter info, but that’s just random chance really, isn’t it?

You can’t use the plugin browser to find non-plugins. It doesn’t do that.

I thought I had made it clear that I only wanted a counter, not a plug-in.

As to whether or not it’s random chance that someone might recommend a non-wordpress counter; I think that in all fairness you should leave that to chance and stop trying to predict the future; Wouldn’t you agree?

Here’s the deal … just about any code you want to add to your site can be added with a plug-in. The difference is between plug-ins that add a lot of unnecessary features and ones that do just what you want them to do. I have one plug-in on my site that adds 12 different admin screens and syndicates content with 2 other sites – but I also have one plug-in that just adds a “You’ve published XX,XXX words” tag on my dashboard.

So, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it looks like you’ve had a bad experience with plug-ins … but at the same time you’re not going to find a developer/coder/professional on these forums who will recommend anything but. Even if they can give you a good script to count visits to your site, they’ll still recommend you drop the code into your site as a plug-in.
