• Hi,

Our provider has repeatedly warned us regarding high cpu/script usage and the culprit seems to be admin-ajax.php. We are trying to find the source of the problem by eliminating the (seemingly hundreds!) possible sources of the problem. We have also disabled hearbeat except on posts and set the delay to 60 seconds.

Are there any Jetpack modules that are known to call admin-ajax frequently? We currently have only a handful active such as site stats, popular posts, related posts, widgets and enhanced distribution.

Any help would be appreciated as we’re pulling our hair out to find the source of the problem!

    Many thanks

  • I am having the same issue starting yesterday. My host suspended my site twice for usage. I tracked it to the same admin/ajax-php. I just installed the plugin Query Monitor and it started tagging Jetpack as making to many PHP calls. I am not sure what has happened as I have not added a new plugin, made changes, etc. I have been using the same version of Jetpack for over two weeks with no issue, just started out of nowhere. Looking for advice also

Some modules use admin-ajax.php, but most of them only use it while in the dashboard, so only you or other admins would be using it.

We do use it for example when displaying the Jetpack menu page in the dashboard. We use it when the spellcheck is called when you publish a post. We use it when you configure the sharing buttons in Settings > Sharing, or when you create a new Contact Form.

Only one Jetpack module uses admin-ajax outside of the dashboard: Jetpack’s Carousel module uses Ajax to handle the comments appearing below each image in the Carousel view.

If you use Carousel, you could try to deactivate comments in the Carousel view to see if bots are abusing the comment form there on your site. If that doesn’t solve your problem, you’ll know that the issue must be caused by something else.

Let me know how it goes!
